Especially in today’s world, it is interdisciplinary and collaborative work that is the most impactful and powerful- exposing yourself to disciplines and skillsets outside of your immediate range of interests and passions is crucial not only for long term success but an opportunity to discover new hobbies that you did not realize that you had.

  1. Free technical workshops at the NYU Library: Intro classes for SPSS, R, Stata, Data Wrangling and more all available for free! The classes are usually around 1–2 hours. I’ve personally taken their Introduction to R class and it was a really comprehensive overview and a short but great exposure into a new programming language. Link: https://nyu.libcal.com/

2) Violet Network: New York University’s official online community driving professional connections within the university’s global network. If you do nothing else on this list, please please please sign up for this! Gives you access to dozens of alumni that will prove an incredibly valuable resources whether you want advice, insight into any future professional or personal decision and of course, to network and learn more about available opportunities. 3) Podcasts run by NYU schools currently: Learn more about our alumni and get involved projects currently occurring on campus. Every speaker on these podcasts that I have reached out to has been receptive to having a conversation! Two notable examples below:

i. All in a Day’s work: features members of the NYU community doing interesting work and navigating the professional world. Examples include: Iynna Halilou, Global Programs Manager of the Entrepreneurship Accelerator and Kyleigh Russ, founder of Govern for America (a personal favorite episode). ii. NYU Stern MBA Podcast: MBA student-run podcast sharing untold stories of students, alumni and faculty at NYU stern. Link: https://open.spotify.com/show/2nVBKtrqKx8yhm2rbYIeF6?si=bAmHpXbAQGCMH_adiNFv9g

4. NYU MLK Week Events: the university commemorates MLK’s visit to campus years ago from Feb 1st to 6th providing an incredible opportunity to learn more about our country’s history from the lens of artists, performers and entrepreneurs. Two notable examples below:

i. Courageous Conversations in AI, Feb 1st 6 pm: Will be hosted by the renowned Dr. Julia Stoyanovich- a huge inspiration and co-director of the NYU Center for Responsible AI

ii. NYU Steinhart Graduate Student Organization MLK Oratorical Contest-, Feb 2nd 7 pm EST: visual, dance and poetry performance with the thematic heading: “Where do we go from here: chaos or community?” If there is anything I learned from playing instruments throughout my childhood is that certain understanding best occurs when heard through art and creative performance. I try to attend at least one of these a year

5. Love Data Week: A datathon co-organized by Data Services and NYU’s Data Science Club (Link: https://nyu-dataservices.github.io/2021-love-datathon)

6. Tisch at Sundance 2021: 6 of the films in the Sundance festival are written, directed or produced by Tisch alumni or Tisch artists and this week of events is intended to share and discuss their work

i. Notable Mention: A conversation with Sons of Monarchs (Winner of Sundance Sloan Prize) director, French- Venezuelan film director Alexis Gambis.

7. NYC Media Lab: collaborative environment between Tandon School of Engineering and Media, Tech and Arts building. I try to attend almost every event that comes out of the Lab- I really do believe what I wrote in that first paragraph that this collaborative model of work: design and engineering teams, artistic and AI work will grow to exist in most lean teams and companies.

i. Notable Mention: One of my favourite events was Art and AI where they talked about the role of machine learning in creating new tools for artists to create. Link: https://www.nycmedialab.org/newsletters

8. Institute for Public Knowledge: They bring together academics, social researchers, and organizational leaders around issues of public concern

a. Notable events: Co-opting AI and “security”: A discussion around policing as it presents itself in a world of increasing Artificial intelligence: innovative benefits or target on vulnerable communities? Sign up here: https://ipk.nyu.edu/events/
